Fiona Callow's blog about getting inspired and staying inspired. Yes, this is the home of "Try It On Tuesday" -- that’s when I take a dress, try it on, have a photo taken, then write something inspired by the dress that gets posted on Tuesday. (If the mood strikes I sometimes post more often, too.) It's a writing exercise for me, something I designed to keep writing fun for me. (I write these stories fast, usually in the gaps in my day. I am also writing a novel.) What's the point of all this, you ask? For me: mental stimulation, staying creative, trying out new ideas ... For you: frivolity, procrastination, a reprieve from the chaos of your life. You get to read some fiction. I get to write some. It's a win-win situation.

Feb 2, 2010: Inspiration

Welcome to the first Try It On Tuesday post during Retro Month. Today’s dress: tiers of taffeta, a huge bow, some rhinestones, ruffles on the shoulders (naturally), and a clingy bodice. At one point, dear readers, this specimen was a cute little dress. The side ponytail was my idea — proof that I have a sense of humour about all this. The dress struck me as one that would be worn by a girl in the suburbs. The dress made me think of prom nights, for obvious reasons, but I didn’t want to get all sentimental about that idea. The first two paragraphs came to me while I was walking, and I managed to remember it until I got home. (Lesson: always make sure you are carrying paper and a pen, even if you are not carrying the purse that usually has the paper and pen in it with you …). I wrote the rest of the scene, which ended up being more dialogue-driven than I anticipated, in 90 minutes tonight. It started because I picked something off the floor with my toes. As I did so, I remembered having a conversation with a friend (who I regrettably haven’t spoken to in a while) about the ability to pick things up with one’s feet, things like tea towels and cat toys.

In case you are wondering, I think the narrator is 11 years old.

I’ve been working a lot on various things, and I am tired. So, no resolution to this one. Call it a scene.

And now I need to go to bed.
