Fiona Callow's blog about getting inspired and staying inspired. Yes, this is the home of "Try It On Tuesday" -- that’s when I take a dress, try it on, have a photo taken, then write something inspired by the dress that gets posted on Tuesday. (If the mood strikes I sometimes post more often, too.) It's a writing exercise for me, something I designed to keep writing fun for me. (I write these stories fast, usually in the gaps in my day. I am also writing a novel.) What's the point of all this, you ask? For me: mental stimulation, staying creative, trying out new ideas ... For you: frivolity, procrastination, a reprieve from the chaos of your life. You get to read some fiction. I get to write some. It's a win-win situation.

Inspiration - January 10, 2010

Another audience paticipation story. I asked for song titles or song lyrics from five friends. I had the following things to work with: songs from The Dixie Chicks, Lily Allen, Blue Rodeo, Taylor Swift, and Switchfoot; brown strapless dress from Melanie (who is my esthetician, which is important to know, as well as a friend); a bitchy mood. The title is a line from Lily Allen’s “Smile,” so chosen because it always gets stuck in my head after I hear the song. From there it was a pretty smooth jump to ’lying makes people feel bad’ and thus the first line of the story. I wasn’t in the mood for writing a particularly nice character. I definitely picked up on the negativity and sarcasm of the first two suggestions (“Not ready to make nice” by The Dixie Chicks and “Smile”) more than the ‘love story’ theme of the others.  I don’t expect you to like her.

P.S. I reference one other song fairly directly. Tell me what it is and I’ll let you suggest a location for the next story. Comment away.
