Fiona Callow's blog about getting inspired and staying inspired. Yes, this is the home of "Try It On Tuesday" -- that’s when I take a dress, try it on, have a photo taken, then write something inspired by the dress that gets posted on Tuesday. (If the mood strikes I sometimes post more often, too.) It's a writing exercise for me, something I designed to keep writing fun for me. (I write these stories fast, usually in the gaps in my day. I am also writing a novel.) What's the point of all this, you ask? For me: mental stimulation, staying creative, trying out new ideas ... For you: frivolity, procrastination, a reprieve from the chaos of your life. You get to read some fiction. I get to write some. It's a win-win situation.

January 5th’s inspiration

Yesterday I posted a status update on Facebook asking my friends to suggest five words to include in today’s story. I got six: glamorous, luxurious, feisty, spackle, trite, and brazen. Five adjectives and one noun. To this I added the dress of the day, a black slip dress worn with a Tiffany key. Here’s how my incredibly random and very quick thought process worked: the dress looks similar to the one I saw being worn by Christina Aguilera in the hype over what ‘celebrities’ did for New Year’s Eve = gossip magazines = sarcasm about images (thus “glamorous”) = a grandmother character + “spackle” = renovation project = worries over legitimacy of work done = anxious mother (thus “luxurious”) + needed description of bathroom = pictures on walls + “feisty” and “brazen” = memory. Or thereabouts.

You too can become a friend on Facebook and join in the fun. Look me up under Fiona Callow. My pic shows a woman wearing a strapless black dress and a cloche. If you don’t know me in ”real life” — Fi is a pseudonym — then add a note saying you read the blog, please.
